Indian War Pension File

Indian War Pension File

Rhinehart Roots

The United States was involved in numerous Indian Wars throughout its history.  Many of the soldiers who fought in these battles in the 1800s were entitled to pensions from the federal government.

The pension files usually tell information about his service in the war, his life after the war, and details about his family. They are usually between 50-100 pages long. These are available for soldiers of most of the wars that were fought in the 1800s.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  Not every soldier received a pension, so not every soldier will have a pension file to order.  A pension index card is required when ordering the pension file.  Because of the way that the files are organized at the National Archives, there are no exceptions to this.  If you need help finding a pension index card, this page has links to the various indexes online.

Please input as much information as you know about your soldier, below OR upload a copy of the pension index card, if you have it, when ordering.  These are searchable on Ancestry.com's Military Pension Index

(Please submit the soldier's name, even if you're submitting a pension index card.)
