We’ll be happy to help if you have specific questions. Please take a second to read the three points below. Thanks!
First: If your question involves any of the following, there’s good news:
- What kinds of records are available aside from the Civil War?
- How much does it cost to order records?
- How do I order records for my soldier?
- What kinds of records may be available for my soldier?
- How does this work?
That page explains the types of records that may be available, how the process works, and includes links to the indexes and order forms.
Please take a moment to review that page first before contacting us here. If you still have questions after reading through it, feel free to reach out and we’ll be happy to help.
Get StartedSecond: Confederate pension records
We do not have access to Confederate pension records. Those records are kept at the state archives rather than the National Archives.
Please use this link to help locate those records.
As much as we would like to help with Confederate records, we are limited to what is housed at the National Archives, so we can’t assist with those requests. Please do not submit requests for Confederate pensions.
Third: Please be specific in your question
Please include the name of your soldier and regiment, if possible.
Instead of asking a vague question like “Are there prisoner of war records?” or “Are there pension files for state militias?”, try to be as specific as possible.
“My ancestor, John Smith of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry, was captured in 1863 at Gettysburg."
In many cases, the only way to answer your question is to check the indexes, so without a name, regiment, or other specifics, it can be difficult to answer accurately. Including those details saves time and allows us to answer your question more quickly.
