We’ll be happy to help if you have specific questions.
Please take a second to read below first — there’s a chance your question is already answered on the website. Thanks!
If your question is about any of these, there’s good news:
- What kinds of records do you have access to beyond the Civil War?
- How much does it cost to order records?
- I would like to order records for my soldier
- What kinds of records are going to be available for my soldier?
- How does this work and how do I get started?
The good news is that this page will help you with most of that. It has explanations for the records that are available, plus links to the indexes and the order forms. Please check that out — and if you still have questions after reading, feel free to reach out.
Go to “What’s Available”Important: Confederate pensions
We do not have access to Confederate pension records. Use this link to help find them. Confederate service records are online
As much as we would like to help with Confederate records, we’re limited to what’s at the National Archives, so we can’t help with those. Please do not submit requests for Confederate pensions.
When you message us, please be specific
Please include the name of your soldier and the regiment, if possible.
Example:
Instead of: “Are there prisoner of war records?” or “Are there pension files for state militias?”
Try: “My ancestor, John Smith of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry, was captured in 1863 at Gettysburg.”
In many cases, the only way to answer your question is to check the indexes — so without a name, regiment, or other specifics, it can be difficult to answer. Including those details saves a back-and-forth and helps us respond quicker and more accurately. Thanks!
Tip: If you don’t know the regiment yet, share whatever you do know (state, approximate dates, location, widow’s name, etc.) and we’ll do our best to point you in the right direction.
